We’re moving to Discord!

by Chia Team

The Chia ecosystem experience means a lot to us. If you’re on Keybase, you’ll see many of us are very active in the community; you may also have some opinions on how it feels to use Keybase compared to other apps you may currently use – like Discord.

We initially chose Keybase for the comprehensive security features, understanding that we were sacrificing ease of use for increased safety. It has historically met our needs as our primary communication channel, but we have always been sensitive to the community’s concerns and desires to move to more traditional platforms and have continually kept an eye on evolving options. With the sustained growth of the community and Discord’s rollout of improved identity verification and identity linking capabilities combined with the security of a Chia-built DID bot, we’ve decided now is the time to make the switch.

What happens next?

Starting May 3, we will begin sunsetting most public community Keybase channels and initiate the transition to Discord for all support and developer relations communications. We’ll share an official invite link and detailed instructions, including requirements for joining the new official Chia Network Discord channel. Our setup on Discord will mirror the existing Keybase layout with easy-to-navigate channels for conversations.

On June 1, all Keybase channels, besides General, will have access removed, with all interactions officially transitioning to Discord. General will remain for archival purposes and to help direct folks to Discord.

Using a combination of Chia DIDs and our custom-made bot, we have a secure method for validating Chia staff to ensure anyone with a Chia-green name in the “Chia Employees” user group is, in fact, a Chia Network Inc. employee. Anyone NOT in this group claiming to be an employee should be taken with a grain of salt – the same as you would anyone else in Keybase. Our team will be available throughout this transition in both Keybase and Discord to help.

We’re excited to see you on Discord!

Community FAQ

What will happen to Keybase?

  • Beginning May 3, we will start sunsetting most public community Keybase channels and initiate the transition to Discord for all support and developer relations communications. On June 1, all Keybase channels, besides General, will have access removed, with all interactions officially transitioning to Discord. General will remain for archival purposes and to help direct folks to Discord.

What will happen to the Keybase message history? Will we be able to access old messages for historical reference?

  • On June 1, all access to Keybase channels, other than #general, and their message history will be removed. The #general channel will remain for historical reference and to direct users to Discord.

What steps will I have to take to migrate to Discord?

  • We encourage you to join the official Chia Network Discord channel beginning on May 3. Specific instructions and requirements for joining the server will be provided on May 3, but in short, we will have similar processes to what is found in other community discords, as well as a verification component similar to Keybase’s current one.

Will the engagement be the same on Discord as it is on Keybase?

  • Our Discord setup will mirror the existing Keybase layout with easy-to-navigate channels for conversations. Using a combination of Chia DID’s and our custom-made bot, we have a secure method for validating Chia staff to ensure anyone with a Chia-green name in the “Chia Employees” user group is, in fact, a Chia Network Inc. employee. Anyone NOT in this group claiming to be an employee should be taken with a grain of salt – the same as you would anyone else in Keybase.

Will Gene and Bram still be active in the community?

  • Gene, Bram, and Chia staff will continue actively engaging with the community. We strongly recommend validating identities when communicating to ensure the user is labeled as a Chia-green name in the “Chia Employees” user group.

What specific security features from Discord made you rethink the decision?

  • Discord’s rollout of improved identity verification and identity linking capabilities, combined with the security of a Chia-built DID Bot, enabled us to securely initiate the shift.

Can you tell us more about Chia DID Bot?

  • The custom-built Chia DID Bot enables an external, on-chain validation of the identity provided to Discord.

Who will be moderating the server?

  • Our moderation practices will remain the same, facilitated by our verified support and volunteer moderation teams in tandem with select Chia Network staff.
